Now I don't know much about Linux, but I would like to hear reviews of actual people who have used the OS instead of website reviews. What are some of the Pros and Cons to a Linux system? I heard about it has an open source code, so it is almost fully customizable (if that is even a word). I wanna try a Linux-based machine, but I'd like to hear what it is really all about.

Linux sucks for games. It does have a sharper/smoother images and all. Ive seen my brother use it!

I like Linux, and I have two machine with it loaded here. One with Fedora Core and one with FreeBSD (not linux, but similar).

The only problem I have is that games aren't built for Linux, and Linux isn't made for games.

for servers you cant beat em......they are full open sorce (cept for one version which has sum closed source shit) so its dirt cheap to buy the cds and free to download. it has open office which is an open source office program that is just as good as any of microsofts shit. it runs a lot like a dos system in that you have to type a lot of commands in a consol. also since there are many verisons of it (litterally dozens upon dozens) companies usually dont make drivers for hardware. so google it. and hope sumone has made one. i know personally i couldnt get online with mine till i hardwired my computer because my usb adapter wasnt supported

if you suck at learning commands youll have a hard time
configuring your hd for a dual boot system can be fustrating and a bitch

Windows is the best operating system the world has ever seen.

Linux is great for servers, but Windows has made MASSIVE improvements in their server technology in the past 5 years.

I've run websites off of windows and linux servers, and I'm going to have to say linux is more sophistocated, but it's also more complex. There's nothing wrong at all with a windows webserver.

For desktop use, I've used Linux before... and let me say, it's a big steaming pile of horse shit. The Linux desktop is not only more complicated (with not much more functionality), but it's just awkward. It would take a lot of customization to make it look sleek or clean-cut like the windows desktop is.

Lots of people on the internet love Linux because there are lots of programmers on the internet, and they're into the huge open-source movement. Open-source is great. It's what allowed the phpbb community to come together and create this forum engine we all use on an almost daily basis; it's what allowed me to customize it without paying anyone for working on it before me.

The difference between open-source programmers and microsoft's programmers, though, is that microsoft's programmers get paid. With php and sql technology (all largely spread through the open-source movement), Joe Blow programmers learn and create new things to do with 'em and share 'em around. With Microsoft's ASP and .NET, people are PAID to think of new and cool shit to do with their code... so (I believe) sooner or later, Microsoft is going to catch up and blow Linux and the open source community out of the water as far as functionality goes.

In a programming enviornment, though, Linux isn't the beauty. Unix is the beauty. Unix is the underlying operating system that Linux was built on. I've programmed unix routers (so has Strange!) from a command-line interface. Hell, a lot of website changes (including the big move in December) was done through the linux shell (command-line) via SSH.

Desktop use: Windows for the win.
Web/Gameserver use: Linux is champ, but Windows isn't far behind at all (especially with all the new .net and ASP technologies that have been coming out)

If you're thinking about installing Linux on your machine, go for it... just dual-boot it. Don't get rid of windows to use Linux, cause a couple days into F*CKING with lin, you'll want the warm tingly feeling windows gives you.

I agree with Gemen almost word-for-word on this one, except I don't think Windows wil ever have the raw processing power vs. resources abilities that the *nix breeds get, and that' mainly because of their raw, machine-code-style operating mode. It's just simple, no-nonsense 1's and 0's as fast as the CPU can push them.

Winderz is purdy and useful for home. *nix is for the server machines.

I have an experimental machine that's a dual P3 600 with 512M of ram that will run 3 CZ servers more effectively than my 2.4G P4, 1G of 800mhz RAM machine can run ONE server. But that's only if it's done in text mode with no graphics, and separate terminal screens are used to place the server processes in the background.

When I boot the linux machine to a graphical interface, it sucks ass. Like Gman said, it's more than just "something new to get used to".... it's a hunk of shit interface. That goes for the X system, KDE, ICE and every other graphic interface I've tried. It's "tolerable" at best, and I put up with it because it's a fuckload easier to move and copy and install shit with the interface than in text mode.

Home use? Windows with a F*CKING grand slam home run for XP. Windows XP is the best and most stable installment of the monopoly yet. I just wish it wouldn't require a fresh installation every 8 months to stay running nice and tight. Anyone remember Windows ME? How about 98? 98 was so bad they had to do it twice. And the ever popular Windows 95 with it's constant blue screen of death popping up. I think they should have gone from Windows 3.11 to Windows 98SE to Windows XP. The shit in-between fucked more people than your sister-in-law at the prom.

Linux/Unix blends? Use them at home if you think it'll make you sound cool or turn you into an overnight code-hacking genius. If you're not planning on running a server or experimenting with running a server... you're wasting your F*CKING time just trying to look cool. Unless.... you just love the challenge of something new, and you like to be different.....

Not everyone has Linux.
Linux has some nice features, and with the open-source you can find downloads for things like software dvd players ( or plugins ), chat server stuff, ( I really only use Yahoo Instant Messeger ) btw: the YIM for linux doesn't support webcam...at least not now....that blows!

It took me forever to configure plugins for the linux media player, but I got that to work, which was nice. I watch all my movies on my computer.
The linux insallation that I had which was SUSE 9.2 also has an mp3 player that works nice too. no problem there.

But damn!! try to install something....OMG! it takes forever.
I guess it's because I'm so use to Windows...I can recognize all the icons, and there uses.

Games....I tried to use Caldera ( WHICH MAKES YOU INSTALL WINDOWS ANYWAYS ) but would allow you to play games on your linux machine.
sux dix....I couldn't get it to work....that was the only thing that made me go back to W2k ( yeah, I'm a big Windows 2000 pro fan ) sorry but Windows XP sucks up too many recources...and reminds me of windows 98se.

You know what? So what if Microsoft is a monopoly? There's nothing illegal about having a monopoly as long as you're fair to competition and follow all of the nice little trade laws that protect us consumers. Microsoft is doing that; they're doing a great job of staying within the bounds of the law. I believe that if someone works their ass off and makes a badass product that everyone falls in love with, they deserve to reap the benefits of it. Since this is the closest thing to a free world we've seen since the caveman days, you've got the right to bitch about it for no reason... so I'll allow it.

why do i hate windows


1) you need a fresh install every few months to keep it running smooth (even with scanners and whatnot)

2) it always crashes when your in the middle of sumthing important

3) the security flaws

4) ive gotten it pretty much figured out and its boring

5) wmp is a form of spyware

6) a lot of the hardware/software is shit

7) it has a very limited amount of customability (well sames goes for linux)...sure colors are nice, and sum themes but meh

8) they buy out competition because they cant program there own shit

9) ie is so intergrated in to the system that if it crashes you computer can crash

10) they run up prices because people who want to buy a lisense have to do it from microsoft, this is figured in iwth prices, thus making shit higher priced

Yeah, I was thinking about having both OSs on the new machine just incase, but my only concern is that if I wanna use Linux to its full power, then I think the XP installment will take up lots of space and, how you say, hold back the potential of Linux.

partition your hd and go for a dual or even trip boot.

just make sure if your computer came with an xp cd to install it first since it looks the the c drive

i have a dual boot with suse 9.3 (linux) and windows xp


i fucked up when i partitioned and was going for a trip boot with win 2k as well but had a power surge and it fucked it to hell


so now ive got 4 partitions and only 2 os's loaded (though part is a swap partition)....when i get time ima format the unformated to win 2k if i can


also if you go with suse 9.3 you can partition it from there

win 2k also has a partition thing on it so its personal preference....

the only differance is if you use the windows partition you choose your os in the black and white screen, and if you use the linux you choose it from a linux screen.....same concept with only moving the mouse and hitting enter its just the background that is differant

with the linux 9.3 you get 2 diff boots at the menu......normal, and fail safe (safemode....only differance from win is that you dont have to hit f8 to get to it)

No i would think Mac is the best OS anyone has ever seen and with the new Os they are coming out with you will be able to use any type of windows software in a Mac:) Mac is the most stable and fastest Os out. Did you know you could leave a Mac on for 1 year st8 without any type of an error even if you installed you drivers????? i think thats F*CKIN hott as F*CK.
