Re: cpu and video card upgrade
It would be far, far better to spend just a little bit more and replace the motherboard entirely. With that board, you only have support for AGP cards. Upgrading the CPU and GPU is simply not worth it. If you can't afford another motherboard right now, you should save up so that you can replace the board, cpu and gpu. Otherwise you will be wasting money. If you are determined to keep the board (I highly advice against it), these are CPUs that your board supports. It is going to be next to impossible to find brand new Athlon XP CPUs. You'll have to settle with a used product, which is not a really good idea when it comes to CPUs. The GPU options you have are also not worth it. Save a bit more, and replace the Motherboard, Processor, Video Card and Power Supply (to ensure that your video card gets enough power). Trust me.

What Reborn said! Not only would trying to upgrade be pricey due to the lack of available components now but if you were to upgrade you would be spending money on parts that still would not really benefit you in the long run. Not only that but when I've looked at AGP cards they were not only slower than their PCI-e counterparts but they also cost much more so do as Reborn said and save up some more money for a major overhaul.

They have some descent atx and Matx boards from asrock, and some cheaper msi boards. You will want a socket Am3 for the newer amd cpu's aswell as atleast a pci-E 2.0x16. Honestly Heres some descent shit that can help you out for a cheap budget Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813157176.. (same board im puttin in my sysetm allows for much of the newer tech) $59.99 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103872.. (again the same cpu that will be in my system) Can be unlocked to make a phenom x4 $73.99 Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product.. (its a 2gb dual channel kit but you can always add more ram as needed) $37.99 Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product.. (not a real high end card but will run Source games maxed and brand new titles on medium-high at 50 fps it also doesnt need a great psu as long as its 400W) $79.99 TOTAL W/O shipping $251.96 That system would greatly help your fps and can do some moderate gaming (nothing to crazy) for about 250 bucks if you do up your psu it may be $300 NOTE: For about 150 more dollars you can get a radeon hd 5770

But if he replaces his mobo he's gonna have to replace his RAM...Heatsink & Fan...maybe even have to remap his board screw in thingys...drawing a blank. My advice...save up until you can get a Mobo, CPU, RAM, GPU and a decent heatsink n fan...possibly even a new case...hell just build a whole new system.

Re: cpu and video card upgrade
The RAM I know for certain is usually cheaper when it is newer rather than when it is older. I recall trying to buy RAM for an old Pentium 4-based mobo and it cost me twice as much for half what I could get when buying newer RAM.

Re: cpu and video card upgrade
Also, CPU retail boxes come with the heatsink and fan attached. RAM is definitely going to cheaper as opposed to upgrading his existing RAM as Kwang mentioned. A new case is really not necessary because even if he loses the motherboard mounting washers/screws they are ultra cheap. It's just the cheapest upgrade option, aiming for most savings as opposed to convenience.
