I have been playing Day Z quite a lot lately. I enjoy it when you have people to play with. Once you get weapons and good gear you can have fun with it for a bit but it is lacking, as most survival sims like this would be. It'll be much better once more of the features from the mod are implemented. There is a lot planned for that game.

what kind of features that are currently lacking on the standalone are keeping it from being as good as the mod? Because I've heard the "lack of features and polish" complaint more than any other.

Well the use of vehicles adds to the game. The ability to build structures is another plus, especially when you have a group of people you play with. I am not really complaining considering these are things that are currently being worked on along with many others. I don't expect polish in an alpha.
