Today I was was listening to Bring the Horizon and came a across a performance that sounded like the singer was losing his voice. Now he said he had a sore throat and in more recent performances he was fine, but it made me think. Does screaming tear up your voice alot after a while? I scream and growl alot to songs, but i dont think i should worry since its not so often but im curious.

Any screamers out there? or videos of artists past their prime with destroyed voices now?

There is a right way and a wrong way to do screams and growls. Growls tend to be healthier, but screams can be done safely.

Yeah i like growls alot =) and yeah in video with the guy screaming, it really seems like there isnt much stress at all in the vocal chords, must be a good rule of thumb to keep in mind not to force it

For that kind of music, I am more enamored of people who can really do it. Not many can without destroying their vocal chords. It shouldn't be forced either way because either you can or you can't. If you can't, then you have to fake it like 90% of the singers out there.

Well it makes me wonder. What is it that allows somepeople to do it naturally? I wonder what do they have physically that allows them to pull it off. Maybe its the way their vocals are shaped? It baffles me that there's a barrier there. Is it actually just discipline that allows then to learn about to do it correctly and not fake it?

Corey Taylor from Slipknot was doing the real shit forever, but then when he quit drinking his throat couldn't take it so he had to do it with false chords.

It has more to do with the fact that it's easier to relax your vocal chords if you're tanked. He stopped getting tanked, didn't switch over to yogic breathing exercises, failed hard.
