Alright so I have a question. Does Mac OS X-server have a equivalent to a Windows domain? At work we currently have a Windows domain where we have all the windows pcs and I was asked to start a project on setting up a domain server on mac os x-server. Is that even possible?

So... OSX has OpenDirectory. Microsoft has ActiveDirectory. You can't set up Active Directory on a Mac OSX server and you can't set up OpenDirectory on a Microsoft server.

Setting something like this up is going to require a lot of reading and testing. It's not going to be particularly easy, especially without experience with things like LDAP and MS AD. Good luck, and google this SHIT out of any problems you run into. You'll find answers.

Thats actually what I needed to really know. OpenDirectory. Everything I kept googleing kept linking me on getting Macs on the ActiveDiretory. I want my Macs on the OpenDirectory and the PCs on the ActiveDirectory.

From an IT standpoint, that's a pretty dumb way to do it. Use one or the other, not both. You're doubling the IT overhead involved. Unify, unify, unify.

With two independent systems, how do you expect to maintain data freshness?

But seriously, are you going to have two different user account lists, and if someone changes their PW, will it change on both platforms, or only one? You could say, I'll write a script to migrate the change every night but (a) sometimes that's not even possible (e.g. if they use hashed passwords with different salts) and (b) it could cause a lot of interesting issues (I change my password from A to B on Mac then from A to C on Windows, what will my password be the next day?)

So yea, avoid data duplication.
