True but your graphic cards are still air cooled so you still need air moving.


The most important airflow for your vid card is the actual cooler on the vid card.

I have an 8800GTS and it runs hot with a stock cooler 60C idle and up to 80C playing CSS.

I bought an aftermarket cooler for it and it now runs at 45-50C idle and 60C while playing CSS.



I have a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB, it stays 35c idle and about 45c max on load and it has the shittiest looking heatsink and fan. look Here

Another reason I want to go to watercooling is because of my massive number of fans. All are 80mm...2 side, 1 front, 1 top, 1 back, 1 gpu, 1 cpu

Lol I have 5 80 mm 2 in front one on top and 2 led ones so my case looks cool on the side (thinking about putting a third one on it to). Then 120 mm on the back plus the Zalman cpu cooler with a 110 mm i think and i think 90 mm for my two cards Plus the 140 mm one on the psu. Things kinda load but i have head phones on most of the time and only have it on when im home so the noise dont bother me much. Thats right i forgot about my two slot coolers which are 110 each lol all together i have about 350 cfm worth of air moving + or - a little. Yes im a fan whore.

thats the scariest looking heatsink i've ever seen.

Yea by the time I build my next one I should have an actual job so I'll be able to spend a ridiculous amount of cash on it so it's gonna be uber maybe even one of those liquid computers if they still sell a barebone system.

yeah, I dont understand how that heatsink keeps my GPU so cool. I replaced the stock paste with some arctic silver and that dropped it's load temp by around 8c. Vision, your temp is kinda warm. 80c is the worry temp and you're not much below that on load.

80C was my old load temp for my vid card and I looked it up because 140F scares me and my room became a sweat box after a few hours of CSS but these cards were made to run hot like this and it was the normal load temp for my card.

Now that I switched to an aftermarket cooler with 3 60mm fans it dropped my temps down 15-20C with an idle temp of 45-50 and a load usually no more than 60C

The next card I get is probably going to come with liquid cooling setup preinstalled most likely from BFG since their the only ones I know that do that.

Check out http://www.dangerden.com/store/ they have good stuff and are known as the best when it comes to liquid cooling supplies.

You guys spend way too much time worrying about and monitoring your GPU and CPU temps...

AMD Processors Are Hotter Than Intel Processors! NOT

Chips change, perceptions should follow suit too. With revisions coming up every 6 months and new process technology coming along every 18 months, most perceptions rightly should not last very long because they are easily rendered outdated.

In fact, by the time the Joe Public becomes aware of it and embraces it as the "truth", it's usually outdated and incorrect. When it comes to processors, what might have been true a minute ago, may not be true now. Processor technology advances very quickly, and so do the design decisions behind each processor.

It may be possible for me to pin down the origin of this theory. Back when Intel and AMD were locked in a mortal race for the magical 1 GHz mark, AMD launched a chip called the “Thunderbird”. Unfortunately, in their haste to hit the 1 GHz mark, they made a chip which broke all previous heat records.

This left Intel, with no credible challenge at that time, no choice but to attack the Thunderbird's TDP (Thermal Design Power) using their awesome PR and Marketing team. Till this day, people still have the impression that AMD processors are always hotter than Intel processors.

Nothing could be further from the truth though. In fact, before the debut of Intel's Core architecture, their Pentium 4 line had twice the thermal output of a comparable AMD Athlon 64 processor. We didn't give those chips (based on the Prescott core) the PressHOT moniker for no reason!

Airflow optimization

The colder the cooling medium (the air), the more effective the cooling. Cooling air temperature can be reduced by these guidelines:

Supply cool air to the hot components as directly as possible. Examples are air snorkels and tunnels that feed outside air directly and exclusively to the CPU or GPU cooler. For example, the BTX case design prescribes a CPU air tunnel.

Expel warm air as directly as possible. Examples are: Conventional PC (ATX) power supplies blow the warm air out the back of the case. Many dual-slot graphics card designs blow the warm air through the cover of the adjacent slot. There are also some aftermarket coolers that do this. Some CPU cooling designs blow the warm air directly towards the back of the case, where it can be ejected by a case fan.
Air that has already been used to spot-cool a component should not be reused to spot-cool a different component (this follows from the previous items). The ATX case design can be said to violate this rule, since the power supply gets its "cool" air from the inside of the case, where it has been warmed up already. The BTX case design also violates this rule, since it uses the CPU cooler's exhaust to cool the chipset and often the graphics card.

Prefer cool intake air, avoid inhaling exhaust air (outside air above or near the exhausts). For example, a CPU cooling air duct at the back of a tower case would inhale warm air from a graphics card exhaust. Moving all exhausts to one side of the case, conventionally the back, helps to keep the intake air cool.

Fewer fans strategically placed will improve the airflow internally within the PC and thus lower the overall internal case temperature in relation to ambient conditions. The use of larger fans also improves efficiency and lowers the amount of waste heat along with the amount of noise generated by the fans while in operation.

There is little agreement on the effectiveness of different fan placement configurations, and little in the way of systematic testing has been done. For a rectangular PC (ATX) case, a fan in the front with a fan in the rear and one in the top has been found to be a suitable configuration.

However, AMD's (somewhat outdated) system cooling guidelines notes that "A front cooling fan does not seem to be essential. In fact, in some extreme situations, testing showed these fans to be recirculating hot air rather than introducing cool air." It may be that fans in the side panels could have a similar detrimental effect -- possibly through disrupting the normal air flow through the case. However, this is unconfirmed and probably varies with the configuration.
