"God" aka (Rah or Horus) gave us life. If indeed "god" is the sun... "God" also gives us our soul or sol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horus
The theory is that life could not exist without light or the energy from the sun aka "god" Although we do know life exist in the darkest depths of the ocean near volcanic vents. So are volcanos/vents a result of or dependent on warmth, light or related to the suns energy? I don't know. Back to the theory, if a seed sprouts in the spring resulting from the suns light/energy, then thier is a little bit of the suns light/energy in all living things beginning with single cell organisms, through plants to mammals. Thus the term soul or sol.
http://www.cv-helios.net/sunhist.html
Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: Sol
In Roman religion, the name of two distinct sun gods at Rome. The original Sol, or Sol Indiges, had an annual sacrifice and shrines on the Quirinal and in the Circus Maximus. After the importation of various Syrian sun cults, Elagabalus built a temple to Sol Invictus on the Palatine and attempted to make his worship the principal religion at Rome. Aurelian later reestablished the worship and erected a temple to Sol in the Campus Agrippae. The worship of Sol remained the chief imperial cult until the rise of Christianity.

Quote: you can't count people who die in wars or at the hands of other individuals as part of natural selection. it's only when people who die of their own accord from making poor decisions.
Yes, you can, and they do factor into the determination of natural selection. If they weren't strong enough to survive against other individuals, then aren't they less fit? Aren't those who defeat them being selected for? Yes.

Uh, durango, no need for the lecture about God
I was just saying how the hell do we know what God gave us?
You can't be right, because it's just faith.

i could be right, but there is no tangible proof of any theory regarding the creation of the universe/life. so i believe God gave us free will. whether you believe in God or not, we still have free will.
ryan, you do have a bit of a point, but i guess i was being more specific to the idiots that die of their own accord and not assault type scenarios.

A lot of religious parents raise their kids without free will, thus having religion shoved down their throat and never being taught to question anything.
The story of America.

Free will is not a given. I'm not going to discuss it, I'll let you look up determinism for yourself.
Everyone needs to be more educated.
Also, Europe is pretty lax on the whole religious thing.... except Italy because of the Poper. Yes I said Poper.

Determinism is preposterous. We all do the best we can, is it? We're not at fault for our behavior?
I look at life in a more simplified way: shit happens. Nothing determines our actions or thoughts but OURSELVES. Not nature, not some spiritual being... the individual is at fault for their mistakes and choices.
BUT, to a degree I agree with the fact that thoughts and actions are caused by previous events.
Just my opinion.

The main reason I don't consider myself religious is that if no one taught their kids religion from birth, there would be no Christianity or Islam or Judaism or etc. Instead, there would be a scattering of individual ideas to explain the "unexplainable".
I guess it's more a criticism of organized religion, not spirituality in general.

I despise organised religion because I believe when an individual chooses to identify with a special interest group, they tend to lose their freedom of thought, and their ideas become that of the constituency, completely disavowing their own free thinking mind.
