 How should I deal with this?
Here's the situation.
A couple of months ago, one of my friends told me he could get me into e3. Because I trust my friends, I bought plane tickets before I had the details finalized. (I had already submitted my information for him, he didn't respond to it yet). Turns out my friend dropped the ball big time. Dunno what happened, but he NEVER got me registered, so when I showed up today, I couldn't get in. Supposedly his grandpa died but I can't be sure because I can't get a hold of him. I understand that a family emergency comes before me, but he didn't bother responding to me in the last 2 weeks. I've tried to contact him via, phone, IM, e-mail and text message. I think that he should have told me something so I would have known what was happening.
If I was living in the LA region, this would not have been a big deal. However, I live in MICHIGAN, so it's expensive for me to fly out to LA. Luckily I had some other business in San Fransisco, so the cost of going to LA was much less. All in all, I had to spend about $500 for a flight and hotel room. Had I known that I was unable to go to e3 I would have been able to get at least a partial refund.
Long story short, my friend said he'd get me into e3, but he drops the ball in the worst possible way, and doesn't bother telling me. I've essentially wasted $500 dollars over this.
So now I have to think of some way to deal with this situation. Preferably without ruining the friendship that I've had. Right now, I'm dealing with it through alcohol, but that can't last.

That sucks bro. Tell him he owes you big time. I'm sure he'll make it up to you. If you are still in LA enjoy it as if you were on vacatio until you talk to him

Kick him in the face then steal his tennis shoes.
Or ask him politely to make it up to you because he really screwed you over.

Just wait for him to contact you back and tell you what happened. If his reasons are stupid or if he's obviously lying, then kick his ass.
If his reasons are legitimate, then just take it as a stroke of bad luck.
Happened to me last year, except I was the one who told friends to fly out and meet me at E3 and turned out their registrations were invalid.

that is a really long time to go without contact though 2 weeks. is that normal for him to do that? although it cost u 500 it might have cost him more if the family thing is true. best thing to do (if his situation isn't severe) is to ask him to go halfzies with you. but my suggestion is you keep ur cool and stay level headed friendships > £$ it was ur choice to gonon the trip even if u bought the tickets way ahead of time u could still have cancled ur flight especially since u hadn't heard from him in 2 weeks since then

You should post on n00bfest asking for advice instead of doing the obvious and sucking it up and moving on.

@MrSox: It's not normal for hum to be out of contact for that long. Usually, I'm able to talk to him at least once a week. As for canceling the trip, that wasn't really an option once I bought it. It was one of those non-refundable packages.
@pryokid:
if you got in, how is it? I've heard from other people that it sucks this year, lots more conferences, and not that many demos.
