Stas Krivosheev, 17, athlete, scholar

Stas Krivosheev picked up a sabre and became a champion.

He practiced more than 14 hours a week at Nellya Fencers and competed nationally on weekends.

Stas Krivosheev topped both adults and other teens to be the state men's sabre champion in 2004 and 2006.

"He was an incredibly hard worker," said Jackie Jacobson of Sandy Springs, who fenced with him at Nellya. "He would work on an action until he perfected it, whether it took one hour or 10 days. He loved the sport, the mental part as much as the physical part."

The National Merit Scholarship semifinalist at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee fenced against adults and other teenagers to become the Georgia State Games open men's sabre champion in 2004 and in 2006, said Tina Jacobson of Sandy Springs, mother of Jackie Jacobson and of Olympic fencer Sada Jacobson.

She watched him fence from the time he moved to the metro area four years ago. "He was a chubby little annoying boy who joined the other chubby little annoying children, at the time, and became an extremely skilled fencer," she said. "I have never seen a young person able to work that hard and focus that hard."

She saw him become, she said, "a mature, competent athlete with a great comprehension of the game."

Stanislav Olegivich Krivosheev, 17, of Suwanee died at Grady Memorial Hospital Tuesday after being injured in an I-85 automobile accident Monday when returning home from fencing practice. The body was cremated. The memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at H.M. Patterson & Son, Arlington Chapel.

Stas was born in Tomsk, Russia, and came to the United States 11 years ago. He played cello in his high school's philharmonic orchestra. His fencing blade of choice was the sabre, which weighs less than a pound and is a modern version of a cavalry sword.

He assisted in establishing his high school's fencing team, helped train its sabrists and was a well-rounded athlete, said the team's coach, Dr. Robert Fryman of Snellville, a former college professor who teaches advance placement world history.

Dr. Fryman found Stas to be just as well-rounded as a student and friend to his classmates.

"When we had a discussion, it jumped up to the level of a college sophomore," he said.

His friends looked forward to his online instant messages.

"We gave each other screen names for instant messaging," Miss Jacobson said. "We didn't instant-message much, but out of the blue he would send me a link to something funny or interesting.

"I asked him if all he did was sit on the Internet and look for things to make people laugh. He said yes, he liked to make people laugh."

In a discussion with students about what they wanted to be when they grew up, Stas' answer was succinct, Dr. Fryman said: "He said he wanted to grow old."

Survivors include his parents, Tatiana and Oleg Krivosheev of Suwanee; his maternal grandparents, Lyudmila and Arkadiy Maslennikova of Siberia, Russia; and his paternal grandparents, Alla and Eduard Krivosheev of Tomsk.

It's that time of year again, to remember the fallen brothers of n00bfest.

Take care of yourselves, and tell the one you love that they matter to you. Stop being a stubborn asshole. You might not live long enough to regret it.

Well, considering his funeral was a little under two years ago, I think bringing it up to his family would hurt more than help.
