The rights of a law-abiding citizen to own a firearm in the capital?

Will we restrict gun ownership to those who live in the country?

I'm in the middle of the road when it comes to gun control. I believe in the right to own whatever I want for hunting, personal protection, or recreation. If the government can make a case for monitoring of gun ownership for the safety of the general public, I wouldn't have a problem registering all of my guns and ammo in some sort of national registry.

Taking the guns away from law abiding citizens only GUARANTEES that only the criminals will be armed.

F*CK that. As long as we have drugged-out crackheads out there looking for a fix, no home is completely safe from violent crime. As long as there are street gangs that thrive on terror and intimidation and cruel initiations, we cannot let down our guard. We see it in poverty stricken areas and high-end homes as well. I refuse to leave my family's safety solely in the hands of the police and ADT.

There's no reason for the government to come and take my guns from me, because I pose no threat to the general public, I have no (serious) criminal record, and I have never given anyone reason to suspect that I have ill intentions.

Gun ownership is not for everyone. People who are scared of guns should stay FAR away from them. Fear makes people do stupid things and make stupid, careless mistakes. I wouldn't even balk if the government required some sort of gun qualification exam or license before you could own a gun. I'm fine with all that. I just don't believe they have the right to tell me what I can or cannot have for my own personal recreation or safety.

Next on my list is an AK-47. Nothing cleans out a houseful of intruders like an assault rifle! On the realistic side, a scope would make it a very effective hunting rifle!

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm all for gun ownership. Go hunt bears with a flamethrower for all I care. All I meant to do was point out that it's a sad state of affairs when you feel like you have to own a gun in your own country's capital. Ideally, it should be one of the safest places in the US.

Because the nation's capital is a symbol of what our country stands for. The fact that it's corrupt and violent only shows that the people that live in it don't care about their country. It SHOULD be the safest, because that's how our government should be. Because it's the capital, the police department in that area should be top-notch and numerous because they're government workers, and people should have respect for what the capital means.

Originally, yes. Originally, the US was supposed to be remain neutral in all foreign affairs, but that hasn't held true either. If the US government doesn't exist to keep men safe, then why is the police department a government establishment?

We're still our original country. What's changed though? Have we as people really changed and divorced our freedom or have we been lied to and manipulated?

Police exist to enforce the law. There was originally no Federal police because the only law that needed enforcing in our country was our sovereignty and only our military could do that. State and local police existed to enforce the laws of state and local governments, where the most power was supposed to lie.

Over the course of time, we as Americans have constantly done one of two things: sat idly by as our government usurped power from us or willingly cried out to our proverbial mommy to save us from reality.

It's bullshit and there's no need for our country to be the way it is. Something is wrong when a Senator stands up and says "This is a battle between the government and the people and the people need to realize they're wrong."

We can either stand up and fight back or puss out and flee. I would encourage everyone to hold their ground.

Dude, I'm totally with you on that. The country should be a certain way, but it isn't. There's no separation between state and centralized power anymore. It's all the same. Like communism.

Political candidates no longer speak to you directly, and the race isn't about appeasing the will of the people anymore.

But the people aren't united enough to have a proper revolution.

No, but there's enough people ready. They just need a leader.

Too bad there isn't one of them in this election.

love the topic, and love the discussion i'm seeing (yes, i'm new here...), and i love the fact that you guys are paying attention to what's going on with the government. there is a lot of shady shit that's been going on behind the scenes, and it's good to know i'm not the only one looking for it.
