Post gun barrel length
hey how long can a gun barrel be before it starts to cause problems?

What are you looking to do? I guess it really depends. As long as there is enough force to push the bullet out of the barrel.

I'm not planning on doing anything at the moment but I was wondering if it was possible to put a semi-auto weapon into an electric guitar.

I have already done it. My best work was incorporating a full auto turret controlled air-to-air missal onto a turtle during the Indian summer games without a physical controller embodied by another full casing plasma armor coating.

It may hurt to believe it, but I'm serious about whether it's possible or not. I was also thinking of an electric guitar with a tesla coil on the end, but that seems like it wouldn't work because the electricity would probably mess up the sound. And of course, the electrocution part.

But seriously, is there any kind of force from the barrel (not the actual explosion from the end) when you fire that would snap the strings?

Actually, if you attached a Tesla coil onto the end of a guitar, as long as it didn't touch the strings, you probably wouldn't feel much. Wood's a pretty good electrical insulator. It's the corona charges you'd have to control. I'm not sure, but I think a Tesla coil has to be hooked up to a battery. So if you put it on a plate made of a very good conducting material, with a couple holes drilled in it for the wires, then I think you could control the amount of corona charge with a very small battery.

No, because when you fire the gun, the force that pushes the bullet is going in the direction facing out of the gun. It's the force of the bullet, and probably some other components of the gun, pushing back on the gun that causes the recoil. So, it'd take a shitload of firing power to shoot a bullet that shot back enough force to break the strings. Unless you use strings with the gauge of a strand of hair, and put the gun really close to them.

It'd be a lot easier to help if you had sketches or some kind of visual representation or something.

Well I just started thinking about it last night, I'll prolly draw something later today. The reason I asked about the strings snapping is because I heard from somewhere that if you put things on the barrel of a rifle they tend to get really hot.

And if you have an amp on, if you shot the thing while it was on, would it amplify it or just fire? It'd be really neat if it made a loud TWANG on the amp when you shot.

I'm pretty sure pickups detect vibrations, considering that that's what sound is, then yes, the amplifier would also amplify the gunshot. However, depending on the volume of the amp, that could be incredibly loud, to at least as loud as the gun without any amplification.

Off-topic, but I was talking to my mother a few days ago and he said that gold wasn't an conductor.

I laughed her out of the room.

Pickups actually detect disturbances in an electromagnetic field caused by a vibrating string. Only shitty pickups have a microphone effect. Firing a weapon like this probably WOULD make a loud noise because the strings would go apeshit when it fired.

Lower caliber rifle round like a .22 might work fine, but a heavy round with serious firepower would probably knock the string out of tune every few rounds.

i think corpse is correct on this one.

just to add, when you fire a gun the barrel heats up to a couple hundred degrees. if ur looking to just attach the strings and shit of a guitar to a gun and still fire it the chances of you being able to hold the neck/barrel are slim to none after id say about 5-10 rounds.

my sujestion...just screw in the barrle of ur favorite gun onto the end of a full body guitar, panit the thing to look like a normal gun, and for effect run a hose up the neck and make a flame thrower out of the thing. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_06

Yeah, I don't really know anything about pickups that's different from what I've read on Wikipedia for 5 minutes.

But yeah dude, I actually think the Tesla coil idea might be more plausible.

F*CK. If I had a Tesla guitar, I'd start a metal band on the spot.

I was actually waiting to see what you'd say to this. I've got a decent understanding of how guitars work and a pretty good understanding firearms. I totally agree.

Guitars and guitar strings aren't meant to deal with that type of shock-and-vibe. There wouldn't really be any use to making a gun-guitar, though. Generally, when you mix two good things together so it's two-things-in-one, it ends up being something that isn't good at either. Even changes in temperature can change a guitar's tune. Firearms generate heat, and are normally designed to cool relatively quickly. If you were to make a guitar out of Carbon Fiber (I'm pretty sure they exist), the shock and vibe would probably be too much to keep the guitar usable.

While a cool idea, if you followed through with it you'd probably only make a shitty gun and a shitty guitar. What you COULD make, though, is an attachment for a handgun that holds a guitar pick.. and learn to play the guitar with it. That way you can HOLD the gun and play guitar at the same time. It's much manlier that way.

Or, a badass guitar that looks like a Colt Magnum, where the neck is the gun barrel.

People are quitters. I'ma design a well working guitar-gun when I get around to it.
