 Check the news!
We've told you worthless niggz to make sure you don't hot-link ot the forums page, because there's impo-tent news posted on the front page from time-to-time.
This will be especially important as we draw closer to the tournament time. People will need to stay on top of the news and know where they need to be and when.
Just in case you have failed to check the news page, here's what is on the front page of n00bfest.com today:

138,058,756 TOTAL DAMAGE
27.07% OF ALL KILLS ARE HEADSHOTS
By comparison, our pre-steam totals for the 1.5 servers were:

821,521 HEADSHOTS
56,231,734 SHOTS FIRED
341,129,508 TOTAL DAMAGE
32.56% OF ALL KILLS WERE HEADSHOTS
SO LET'S STACK IT ALL TOGETHER!!
3,523,245 TOTAL KILLS
1,136,058 TOTAL HEADSHOTS
77,344,521 SHOTS FIRED

By the way, the CZ server is ranked #57 in the world today. It's fought it's way through the sixties all week this week and has broken a new barrier.

now if we could only find a way to unprotect admins.
so that when they go into eternal spectate mode.
other admins may kick them so people wont have to wait for 30+ minutes to join the server.
also have you given any more consideration to having pay slots?
or maybe expanding the server size, allow 30 people instead of 20?
just some thoughts from over here in the "PLYWOOD STATE"

Yeah i was thinking the same thing corpse. Maybe u should remove immunity from all admins, cuz sometimes they stay in spectate mode forever and sometimes they're afk for like 20 minutes and we cant do anyhthing.

Higher level admin can do this:
admin_rcon kick "wholeplayernamehere"
to get them kicked out.
Otherwise, how about this:
HEY ADMINS!! STOP GOING INTO SPECTATOR MODE FOR SO F*CKING LONG!
There. That should fix it.

Corpse, I think we should increase the size of the CZ server. Its really the only server getting traffic. Can you image having a 32 player server? That shit would be outta hand and full all the time.

We're probably going to have to move the site to a different server before we do that.

Is the CZ server using up that much bandwidth?

No, but the forum is using a shitload of processing power. Each time you view the news page, stories, or any page on the forum; the server has to generate the html for the page by pulling information out of around 9MB of text in different databases. That's a lot of searching/generating. That is why the servers get bogged down when there are lots of people viewing the forum.

Yup yup yup!! It's the creation of web pages from scratch that kills the servers and website response times.
Like Gman said, the pages are created when you click them. Not only that, but if more than one person clicks them, it's generating multiple pages and feeding them out to multiple people at the same time.
The servers make it difficult for the forums and player stats to process and display quickly when the servers are full. At the same time, the webserver bogs the servers down heavily.
We've already decided that the website needs to be moved elsewhere. There's no telling what we can really do once that resource hog has gone away.

Yeah, but I'm going to [probably] look around for more affordable bandwidth. This forum might see more than 10gb/month and that might cost us a shitload.
Information regarding this topic will be released as it is created ;-).

 BY THE WAY!!
The forums here have recently crossed the six-month birthday mark.
In these six months, we have picked-up 162 users (about 150 if you exclude the duplicates). About 40 of those have joined in October, since the announcement of the tourney has been cycling in the servers.
Here's some stats, just for kicks:
Our users have posted a total of 12,342 articles.
There are 1,086 total topics posted.
Average # of posts per day: 65.81
Average # of topics per day: 5.79
Average # of new users per day: 0.86
Total database size: 8.89M
We've had 19,191 hits on the front page of the site since we started counting about 4 month ago. Lots of users go straight to the forums though, so it's not an accurate count of the total exposure.

Hard to imagine that we would pass that 10G/month mark, but if you think about it...
If over 100 users read over 65 posts a day every day of a 30 day month...
(keep in mind, this is probably not too unrealistic based on the information listed on the previous page)
That's a minimum of 195,000 webpages being created from the database and sent to user's screens every month.
If the size of each page was 52K, we would exceed the 10G/month mark. I just saved the source code of this page and entered it into a text document to see how big it would be. It was just a little less than 60K in size.
Most of the images and avatars are stored and accessed from off-site locations. Some are kept on the actual website server, but they're relatively small files. Again, though... if you access them 195,000 times a month it doesn't really matter how small they are. Then if we start to factor the files that are available for downloading, and the files we would like to MAKE available for downloading, we could see the usage go from already high, to VERY F*CKING high.
Makes even more sense now as to why the servers are choking during peak times. I hadn't really done the math on the site usage before.

I thought some of this sounded out-of-line, so I went back and checked the logs that are created every day, tracking the website usage.
I haven't really used them for anything in the past. The default setting is for the website to log all activity, and I just never changed it.
Holy shit! This place creates some serious traffic.
I checked the log folder, and we were creating a new log file every day, the sizes varied. None were less than 3 Meg per day. We had almost 700 MEGS of website log files. Just watching and documenting who's reading what, and what files have to be sent in order for them to see it properly. 99% of it was created since the start of the forums 6 months ago. It was cool to see the tiny log files when there were no forums, and then in April when the forums started, the files started getting bigger and bigger.
I have turned off website traffic logging. I can still track abnormal activity without knowing every single file I sent to every single person every single day.

I need to look at their hosting plans... I'm sure there are places where I can get 50-60gb/month for the same price.

We may also need to make sure we're using the most efficient database and forum packages.
