So ive been thinking about hosting a server for internet raido for a while (have a pretty diverse DB of music that i was going to do for a has-been wow guild) and the idea came to me to host a raido server for the pub server.

i got the idea when i was talking with a buddy who was a DJ for justiceraido.com that was orgionaly hosted on the Justice server in City of Heros.

Talked about how fun it was for the community (back in the day there were only a few hundred tight nit players on the justice server) and i was wondering how this community would enjoy it.

So what do you think n00bs? would you want a n00bfest raido show? would you use it? what would you want to see on there blah blah blah? what do you think it would do for the community?

It'd be kinda hard to use it imo cause everyone never shuts the F*CK up :) unless you just mute mic then well thats pointless XD but good suggestion...also maybe move this to suggestion part of forum?

Ive seen some servers do this and to be frank its absolutely awesome, however the servers that did run them ran a mod that allowed you to pick the station via genre so that you didnt' hear what you didnt' want to

I would definitely back you on this turkey and might be able to help out on the DB part since I have a huge selection as well

as for what to play, you could do as those servers did and split it into genre classes, or you could just do one huge one and take requests somehow

thats with sourcemod. itll allow you to play an entire radio station via downloadable mods. ill be working on something like this, and possibly giving people the ability to upload songs, but not delete... so the playlist will stay up to date.

I used todo this purely out of fun to get my music heard. I used SAM Broadcaster and shoutcast. Rather than making it a radio play through the source server(may cause some lag), host it outside of the game. Thus using the programs I was talking about Shoutcast and SAM Broadcaster. And I would totally be down to be a DJ on it. PM me

ya im fimilar with SAM, justice raido used that in its early days. this is what i was talkin about, not so much just for the CSS players, but for anyone who is playing anything else, just pop it in a media plugin and thar ya go. in the past ive never heard of it causin more than a little lag (if any) so i dont think hostin it in the server would be an issue. then again, for someone who rapidly activates and deactivates the ingame feed might be an issue....more of a reason to host it on a plugin! i see someone else is used to this too, so if we can get some approval from the highers, ill get to work, and virus, your helpin....youve been volentold =P

i like the idea of the radio, im not tech junky but wouldnt putting it on the server cause a lot of lag? it would seem to me that having 30 ppl playing CS, talking, and listening to the radio would cause i lot of slowdown to the server. just a thought...

well that would be desided if the raido station would be a source mod or a winmedia plugin you run in the backround

if its on the server, then i an see slowdown, and a potential for deranged players to rage-spam the raido option to cause slowdown or crash. not only that but i dont think it would support live shows which i do have planned in the future (live interview with Corpshumper lol). as well, the feed would only be heard in the pub server.

for winmedia plugin, i would be able to run live DJ as well as any others, the lag issue would be diverted to the user and not the server (in theory) and this gives noobs who play different games (coach, kitten) the oppertunity to listin in. the only thing about this would be a higher cost and seperate server hosting. i dont think the bandwidth would be an issue. i get cheap internet and can alway create a seperate stream. im still doing research on the music licensing (wanna make sure its legal).

what i have surmised:

SourceMod = simple, easy, restricted, potential for server slowdown, cheap

winmedia plugin = complex, more expensive, more options, better quality, lower risk for server lag, more convienent

Me and Turkey are getting ready to set this bitch up. Were going to be using shoutcast and SAM broadcaster. This way you can play all your games and still listen to the radio using Winamp, WinMedia, or Itunes. Ill post more info as it comes along.

What kind of music is it going to be playing?

it will vary depending on the DJ schedual. im going to be playing mostly head banger music...rock, classic rock, metal, the like.

i think virus is going to be playing mostly rave, house, techno and techno-style.

once we get this off the ground and put in a few test shows, well add other DJs with other music styles. also were looking into doing radio shows with members over yahooIM, aim, and other instant messangers that xmit voice. its on the back burner right now but its a cool idea to work towards i think.

requests are also welcome, as well as albums and music that you may have that you want to share with the community. i may have a sizeable list, but if yall want those underground thrashers and headbangers on the show, then your prolly gonna hafta send em to us.

im stil trying to hash out the details as far as rules, features, DJs, DJ rotation, and other things, but we should have a functioning show by the end of next week at the absolute latest. ill put up a post about it at the end of the month along with the game update info.

also virus, pm me your yahooIM or add me and send a message on steam friends so we can work out IN REAL TIME some issues. kthnxbai!
