 PIFTS.EXE OH NOES
So you like Norton?
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/10/139229
http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=5992
For those of you who hate reading.
1. Norton releases a file called PIFTS.EXE in a hidden folder with rootkit like properties.
2. This files tries to access the internet and is caught by zonealarm and other real firewalls.
3. Any posts on Norton's forums are asking about PIFTS.EXE are deleted and users are banned, including IP banns.
5. Techies decompile the file and sees it access your search history, internet history and other personal information and sends something to Norton and swapdrive. They also find padding at the end of the file, suggesting the file is not a genuine Norton file.
6. PANIC
7. 1 day later, Norton releases a public statement saying the PIFTS.EXE program was suppose to check how many users needed an upgrade for Windows 7 and has no nefarious purpose. Due to human error the file wasn't signed, and therefore triggered the firewalls.

It was probably one of the worst $209 investments I've ever made. I find it is extremely hard to play video games with a giant dick in your ass.

Don't be a retard on the internet and you won't get viruses.

I've NEVER run a computer without some kind of protection. not being an idiot helps, but there are a few viruses out there that can attack a computer from an active internet connection and you really need at a minimum a good firewall to stop them. Windows firewall doesn't count.

So if Norton sucks so much why is it rated in the to 2 almost all the time between it and a few others they switch places back and fourth on most of the reviews for the best all in one security suites. Try again guys i don't care what you guys say but most systems out there don't even use 100% of there resources(unless there old). My q6600 only uses 33% on CS:S and about 50% one CoD4(that's with me alt tabbing to check it real quick so it might be a little higher).

It's because most of the other companies don't focus on all inclusive products. I'd prefer to use a firewall form a company that does firewalls as their main business, and an AV program from a company that does AV as their main business, not bundles. Most newer AV's will hide parts of itself from the task manager to ensure a virus cannot easily find and end the process.

True but that means you have 2 or 3 programs running instead of just one.

I work at an IT distributor, so I have access to free copies on any AV program, but I still run bareback. Never have issues. I don't hate AV programs, I'm just too lazy to install and/or configure them :P
