I was 26 years old and the Dow Jones Industrial Average is at the same number today, as it was then. The sad thing is this: We're not at the bottom yet, it still has a ways to go unless something drastic happens. However, if you haven't done it yet, go to https://www.sharebuilder.com and open up your free account. It's a literal fire sale out there right now. My top picks: ESLR, HNZ, and T.

If you want to make a cheap, high risk investment, try C. Citigroup may take a while to bounce back, but I think it will eventually. It's at $1.02 right now, so if (when) it goes back to what it was a year ago, around $23.00, you'll see a 95% return on your investment. If, however, it goes back to its high, you'll make around 50 bucks for every dollar invested, woo!

Now is the time folks, even if you only have 50-100 bucks, it'd be good to make an investment now and let it ride the wave all the way back up! Start with ESLR!

yessir, if you have the cash and cohones you can potentially make a lot of money when the market bounces back, which it will unless something catastrophic happens and then who cares.

Have you studied economics at all?

I can't get my hands on any real data, but here's an idea of how the stock market generally looks:

Image

The economy always goes up and down, but over time, the general trend is an increase in value. Keep in mind America, and the rest of the world, has made it through depressions many times before.

The economy WILL regain strength. If it by some catastrophic event DOESN'T regain strength, the money you DIDN'T invest will be worthless anyways.

Gin, it's simple: Open up a free account at any of the many places you can, like sharebuilder.com. Deposit the money you want to invest, then when it posts: Buy the stock and then forget about it for a while. Check on the stock you bought once a day or once every other day just to see what the value is. But leave it alone. That's why I say ESLR, it's currently at $1.05. That's dirt freakin cheap. Sure, it may go down even lower before this is all through, but it will eventually go back up.

Falcon, ESLR is through with its planning and building phase. They're now at the production stage. They have hundreds of millions of dollars of unfullfilled contracts out right now and it's all they can do to fill just those. Once they do, they're going to be in the black and probably expand further: Especially since Obama wants X% of the USAs energy to be alternative. With ESLR, they use a string ribbon technology that is 15% more efficient than any other solar panel on the market. So, would you pay less for a more efficient panel? Of course you would! They also use less of the materials than other solar panel producers use, which is more cost effective for the company.

All in all, I think the days of them being in the red is over. By all rights, this should be a 20 dollar stock right now. I see it reaching the 60s once the Obama plan goes into effect. So a one dollar investment will return 59 bucks? Not to shabby! Even if it only hits 10 or 20, which it will, that's still not a bad ROI.

It's a good post. I wish I knew how to go about investing in stocks / had the willpower to do it. With America floating almost belly up, turning a profit would be cake.

The question is how low will it go? I have heard it's going below 4000. Not sure if I should wait before I decide to buy or maybe it will all collapse and I/we should all be selling and/or withdrawl all assets from stocks/banks and run for the hills with mah guns... Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_02

aww well i have studied economics, enough to have a minor in it...

and my question wasnt about the stock market as a whole, it was about a single company (which hasnt shown much progress in its 10 or so years since it started)

but thanks for trying to make me look dumb Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_19

good point, good point. but even though they have the competitive advantage in the market do you think that alternative energys will begin to rise with the oil market so low right now?

Boss, Etrade https://www.canada.etrade.com/pages/home/main.shtml and TDWaterhouse http://www.tdwaterhouse.ca/ both have Canadian branches. I don't know what the minimum is for them though. I use Sharebuilder because I can by 1 share of stock or 1,000,000 shares of stock for the same fee. They don't have a minimum and are easy to use. As far as the exchange itself, http://www.tsx.com/

Falcon, No, not right away. I don't think it's going to start topping out until Obama puts out the alternative energy bill. But, It's going to rise slowly back to at least 10 in the next couple of years, then, as they expand and produce more...well, I don't know, it seems this could be a 60 dollar stock, easily, or it could even go higher. Then again, it could blow up next week and be worth nothing. I have faith that they'll continue to grow, they've been taking all the right steps.

if you want to invest without your money going to some retarded business folks invest in gold and silver, more specifically silver. silver isn't very expensive, but the price is supposed to go through the roof in the next few year due to increasing scarcity from high demand and it's use in industrial applications (circuit boards, cell phones, etc.). it is speculated that the price of silver will eventually exceed gold. on top of that, investing in precious metals is a very good way to protect against inflation, which is sure to happen with all this "bailout" bullshit going on.

Oh. I just assumed the company was doing shit because of the recession, not because of the company's business model itself.

Sorry.

But I guess my little addition to the thread will be sorta helpful for maaaaaajor econ. 'tards.
