Recently my hard drive got reformatted so I had to reinstall steam. I re-downloaded the games, but when I try to open a HL2 version game like CS:Source it starts but then there's like an error where the code can't be read on the HL2.exe. What I do?

Also, when I try to open an older game like HL it opens it then looks like it's working but then just kinda quits and goes back to desktop.

I tried reinstalling steam and even installing it from the disk instead of downloading it and it still comes up with the error. Here's a pic of it.

ah yes my brother and only friend, it looks as though you may have to reinstall steam, or check to make sure you have the new direct x installed on your system.

when your computer starts to frustrate you have a glass of the ol' milk plus that will sharpen your senses and get you ready for a bit of ultra-violence.

I looked into it alittle for ya and found the following:

Quote:
My HL2 was also crashing every time during a save or "loading.." with the infamous memory reference error.

Sanmeet's post at http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/4097p7.html
helped me to resolve the issue and play HalfLife2 finally

I quote him-
"
OK CHILL GUYS I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR THE MEMORY REFERENCE PROBLEM. ITS VERY SIMPLE , I DIDNT THINK IT WILL WORK BUT I WAS AMAZED TO SEE IT DID. I ALMOST THREW MY HL CDS IN THE DUSTBIN...OK OK THE SOLUTION... CLICK PROPERTIES OF THE ICON U USE FOR RUNNING THE GAME. CLICK SHORTCUT TAB... IN THE TARGET ADD "-steam +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1” WITHOUT QUOTES AT THE END INSTEAD OF JUST "-steam" "

Also, remove your windows temp files and have a clean installation.
It worked for me!

cya now, gotta meet Alyx :P

Both seem to point to the same-ish solution, try it if your still having the problem and let us know if'n it werk'd.
Re-installing everything really sucks, especially making sure you got all your drivers up to date and direct x. Another lil hint for people having issues is to, believe it or not, give your cpu's heat sink a good cleaning. Don't spray it with any kind of liquid but see if dust has "clogged" the little fins. I just had to do it cause I was getting 20fps in source and 10 in WoW plus every thing was running slowly. Cleaned the heat sink "which was really dirty" and it quit over heating and fixed all my troubles.

I tried the different launch code and it didn't work, but my video card driver IS out of date. The reason for that being that last time I updated it to the newest version the screen went black and the only way I could get it to work was to go back to the older version.

EDIT: Alright I installed the newest drivers for video card and it still does the same thing. I tried the launch code in the steam properties thing and that didn't work. The last thing I can think of is updating windows but that could be a problem.
