Thats right. Progressive metal or progressive rock. I just wanted to start this post in celebration of bands such as Dream Theater (who has just released a new album called "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" which is EPIC), Symphony X, Tool, Steve Vai, Liquid Tension Experiment, and prog rock bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis. Anyone else into these genres and bands? I guess since I'm a really die hard guitarist, this kind of music appeals to me more than non-musical people (hell, all of Dream Theater's members met and graduated from Berklee School of Music). |

i do enjoy dream theater a little bit, my brother is hardcore into them, heard a couple of their songs and i have to say they're pretty good. but EL&P, Floyd and Genesis are all great bands. myself i am more into electronic music, which some progressive falls really close to that genre. |

Well, its a bit more of a blackish rendition of progression but Ihsahn (Lead singer from Emperor) and his latest two projects have been quite good in my opinion, though you have to be pretty into the extreme stuff to find his rendition listenable and enjoyable. |

I just picked up Dream Theater's new album "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", and it's excellent! Petrucci always pleases. The new single "Rite of Passage" is pretty badass. I won't say it's their best, but it is good. I have been a DT fan ever since I learned about them when I was 16. My son was in the PICU in Miami, and I went to target and picked up Images and Words, and Awake, and I played them out till I knew every lyric, every key change, and progression. I've always been into Rush, Yes, and Queen, and I don't mind a little Muse either. I've noticed I'm big on odd time signatures... not just 4/4 bullshit. |

Hell yeah. "Count of Tuscany" blows Rite of Passage away imho, but the whole album is damn good. I've got the intro up to about 3 or 4 minutes on guitar down. Petrucci and Rudess are such a damn good team! I think DT is easily the most talented group of musicians in popular music today (a lot to say, I know!). Rush is also damn good, as is Queen. I've never been too into Muse, though. Odd time signatures are definitely one of the things that I love in music (thank you Mr. Portnoy), but I like odd time signatures with harmonized flourishes and scalar runs like Petrucci and Rudess do together (too many examples in DT's songs to name). |

I do like some of the progressive metal bands like Symphony X and Dream Theater. I'm more into power metal bands like Sonata Artica, Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Primal Fear, Helloween, Firewind, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire, Dragonforce. |
