Re: Just purchased my first telescope
So far, I haven't been able to see Andromeda, but that's only because I haven't had the time to take the scope out, and it's been quite cold and rainy lately. This telescope could easily see Andromeda, and other galaxies, but prepare to pay around $1400 for the scope and the lenses alone. Mine has run up (including the GPS) to about $1700, but the only problems I can say I'm having so far is my inability to align it correctly with the GPS. It's still off for some reason. I would put that one off to bad seeing conditions, and I'm hoping that's all it is. I'm still saving up for the SLR camera and attachment, so I can take pictures of everything I scope during viewings.
So far, I have only been able to sucessfully align with Jupiter, though, I'm now working on aligning with Saturn. I normally use Beetlejuice to help align, but sometimes it's still unsuccessful. For intense viewing I'm using a 4mm lense with a 2x Barlow Magnifier on it, and Jupiter is about the size of a dime. I am able to see all of its moons, however, they are extremely hard to spot.

that's awesome man, good luck with saving money. you should definitely see if you can find the orion nebula, look it up and see where it's at. it's near his sword on his left, looks like a dim star, might be able to get close enough for a good view.

I took this while up in Tennessee. It is on a tripod and a remote shutter release. The stars may look blurry, but that's just because keeping the shutter open (30 seconds ish) that long plus Earth's rotation causes it. But if you look in the bottom right hand corner you can see some stuff http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/5766/img0431.jpg

It's going to be a while still homie.. I still don't have an SLR or the attachment... though I promise once I have it, the pictures will be outstanding.
I didn't watch the moon thing, since it was at 6am, I think I'm going to take it out tonight though, and I might bring the camera just to see what I can do... but I'm not expecting much since I've got no attachments.

That is sick. I have always wanted to get a telescope. Astronomy is a very interesting field. I know what I want to buy in the next few years when I finally get a career.
