 Microsoft's latest.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/12/29/micr ... index.html
tl;dr:
Microsoft has some intentions for making computers, their products, cheaper to obtain, but to continue to have access and use, you have to pay by rates.

Now if only game publishers would start building games that easily and efficiently ran on an open-source platform, we wouldn't have to worry about this crap.

This sounds like the cell phone plan equivalent of computing.

Anything like this would kill them. I just don't see them following through with a deal like this.

These are computers you would buy for old people who rarely use a computer with the exception of e-mailing war buddies.
Besides, this idea is only really applicable commercially anyways. They're planning to make streaming millions off of their Office programs instead of a flat rate.
Any smart Home-PC user would build their own anyway.

So basically, only gamers will build their PCs and Microsoft will be like "LOL 99% OF OUR USER BASE PREFERS THIS, SWITCH TIME."

Totally.
It's not like the difference between every gaming medium is the label or anything.
