CGI in Movies
I was reading a topic on a certain imageboard that was talking about special effects in movies compared to the ones used in Jurassic Park. When I saw this I lol'd.
Honestly I think it has to do with lighting and anatomy. Most computer graphics and digitally made models you see that aren't very good are brighter and kinda look glossy or shiny compared to their environment. Also, a certain recent movie with Will Smith involving computer made deer and zombies is why I also think anatomy needs to be important. A human cannot stretch their jaw F*CKING 7 inches.
I agree with you Pyro, often CG elements are to bright and have that wet or glossy sheen. I don;t know how much experience anyone has with 3d modeling apps like Maya or 3D Studio Max but the annoyance I have is that glossy look. I think that it comes down to digi artists putting too many whiz-bangs into the materials. Materials are the "textures" they use to wrap around 3d models. In my opinion there are 2 effects that are widely overused. The first is the shellac gloss. Real life isn't always wet no matter how good you are in bed. The second is bump mapping, it works great as long as the depth isn't set at too great a value. (bump mapping is an effect that adds detail to an object based on either an actual b/w overlay or simply based on the colors in a material. It simulates texture like the wrinkles in a shirt or the floor of b tunnels on dust 2. The depth value can be adjusted.)
CG is everywhere and alot of times you may not even notice it. Commercials are full of it. CG is cheap, pretty quick, and can look wonderful. CG shops usually have different people doing different things like a few people actually make the models. Someone else just does the materials, then you have some animators just like in an animation studio with the artists and inkers and such. I think most the blame in crappy CG falls on the people incharge of the materials.
I have the same issue with some games as well. Doom3 went way too overboard with the bump mapping. Yes it looks good but every dent and ding was shadowed like it was a mile deep.
Just my 2 cents.

Exactly (other then gameplay) why I hate source. Somebody must be polishing those floors and walls between every round because they reflect everything. Looks good in the water to have a reflection but not on wood or tile of a building that is blown half to shit.

I'm not a big fan of CGI myself, especially when an entire movie is based around the concept of being entirely CGI (Beowulf and Polar Express...blech).
They can make fun of puppets all they want, but they always seem to look better than CGI models (I like puppet Yoda much better than CGI Yoda), mainly because IMO the CGI models just stand out more than their puppet counterpart.

Film makers haven't quite learned how to open up photoshop and burn/anytool the area in question until it looks like it belongs there.
