What do you guys think of the Remington 700? It's something I've wanted to buy in the hopes of turning it into a really solid reach-out-and-touch-something rifle for under $1500. Recommendations on that?

I prefer the Winchester 70, mainly because the Remington 700 and Ruger 77 are just sackrides of it. That being said, the 700 is still an amazing rifle, and there's more aftermarket shit out there for it than almost any other bolt-action rifle. If you want to get stupid with a bolt-gun, the 700 is the way to go. Don't get 770 or any other 700-esque models. Get a 700.

Do you think I can make a solid sniper rifle out of a legit 700 for under $1500? What's the closest I can get to an m40 without breaking the bank?

I would say absolutely, the hardest part of getting a sniper rifle is shooting it like a sniper

If you shop around you can get a rock solid 700 for around $500. An M40 stock is going to be around $300, and a really good optic (where you're going to spend your money) is going to be $500+. It can be done for under $1500 for sure.

Truth.....

I'm terrible past 300 yards. It takes incredible discipline when shooting like that, I can't do it. I'm confident with hitting a sheet of plywood towards the middle but you throw a 24" plate out that far and even with the best of rifle I'm shit.

Bandy and I were shooting man-sized steel targets at 500yds with iron sights. Coach was there and can confirm. I was rocking a Remington M1903-A3 and Bandy was rocking a Finnish Mosin Nagant M91/30.

M-24 stocks are badass, look into those.

Its not too bad if you know your gun and optics. In SDM school, we were shooting 600 yards with M16A4s and Acogs and it wasnt too challenging, even with a .223. Most of the guys passed the quals. Hell, i qualified in basic with a rifle that wasnt even sighted in for me.
