A big part of the knock down power is the round you use. I like the 9mm because range ammo is cheap as hell and I want to be able to afford to throw THOUSANDS of rounds down that bitch.

I keep a couple of boxes of golden eagle sabertooth gut-ripper ammo for true protection purposes. Load some Wolf brand ammo in a .40 cal and see how little the caliber of the weapon matters.

My opinion is slightly skewed because I have the Beretta 92FS Inox (The stainless steel version of the military M9). I F*CKING LOVE that pistol.

You should have seen Gman practicing the Jackie Chan slide removal defense. It was great. I still can't remove the thing that fast, but I'm old and slow.

I've had a .40 cal Glock up until last year. I ended up selling it to a buddy at work. One thing I'll say for the glock, it was a smooth shooter. You could literally hold the gun with your thumb and forefinger and fire it. However, with cheap ammo (like Wolf) you can really disappoint an intruder. The guy I sold it to shot at a styrofoam plate and one of the bullets actually STUCK in the plate and did not fully penetrate it.

There were a few things I didn't like about the Glock:

Ammo price - I like to blow a couple hundred rounds at a time, and .40 cal ammo just ain't cheap enough to please me.

Stiff slide - even after several thousand rounds, storing it with the slide open, working it, lubing it, loving it, etc., the slide was still too tough for my wife to be able to chamber a round.

Premature wear - after those several thousand rounds I mentioned, the spring retainer was starting to wear against the polymer frame. Not terribly, but enough to where I was concerned about how it would be after 10-15 thousand more rounds. I need a gun that can dish out 10's of thousands of rounds and still hold together. That Glock would not have made it.

Home defense? I have a gun rack on my side of the bed. The 9mm can stay in the closet. I've a 12ga pump shotty, 30-30 lever action rifle, 8mm WWII Turkish Mauser, and a .410 that shoots 3.5" magnum rounds and kicks harder than my 12ga!

I did an ammo inventory the other night and had:
425 rds 9mm ammo
24 medium duty 12ga shells
20 Nitro Magnum 12ga shells
35 8mm rounds (in 5 rd stripper clips)
20 Hornady 30-30 rounds
34 Remington 30-30 rounds

Once I had it all spread out, I realized I've been in stores that had a worse selection than me.

My Beretta 92FS is an all around awesome family weapon. My wife and kids are capable of operating it in an emergency, the ammo is cheap (but hardcore shredding ammo is availble) and I've got 4 clips that hold 15 rds each. Besides, it's stainless steel, silky, sexy, and feels SO good in my hands.....

I'd go with the Glock 19 myself. I'm a sig person but the sig 228 and 229 in 9mm jam way too much. I'm getting the 229 in the .357 sig with my return. which i just looked and it just hit my account...............WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Put a bayonet on it.

Sigs will not jam with good brass.

You'll have a hard time finding a better deal on a good quality gun than that $400 Springfield.

That is only my experience with them at the range. "Good Brass" is too expensive for range shooting.

I've put probably 200 rounds (of higher-end ammo) through a dirty P226 and haven't had a jam out of it. I've noticed that the brass ejects very strangely if they're dirty (as with any handgun, really).

The P226 is an awesome weapon, but the trigger on it just takes too much "humpf" to actually make it fire. I know it can be modified, but I want a handgun that I can take out of the box and be happy with.
