Do you know by chance what software you'll be running as well?

Granted, chances are any PC that can play Left4Dead with decent FPS will handle almost any program you'll use for College, but still, looking at the system requirements for those might be helpful.

If you're capable of building your own I can help you there, but if you're looking to buy a pre-built 1337 machine, i can help you there too

Also are we going Desktop or Laptop.

I'm also in the same situation with the computer for graduation, though I've made my selection as well as the type. Going with an Alienware M17 laptop, though an old guard computer mates will probably give me shit with the cost and the overall trendiness that the company has on their rep. I've just always had a softspot with their design and their seemly nice specs and look. Configing mine with Crossfire 3850s's, Intel Duo core 2.4GHZ, DDR3 RAM, and 17inch 1900X1200 screen.

(PS: though yes, desktop-wise...build your F*CKING own and since your going into video make sure you got both a hearty hdd whether you need one high performance drive for gaming an a standard cheap TB drive for storage of video; along with that make sure to probably get a nvidia GTX (which for the most part was made with CGI an video people in mind to lower your wait time when compiling and rendering) but it seems people are gaming with those cards and getting good results so...)

If those are your intended majors you have to build your own. What's your budget?

Is video design a hobby or intended career?
I ask because those two degree options don't really coincide.
For computer science or electrical engineering, your comp requirements will actually be pretty low.

I haven't played L4D, but it's based off the Source engine right? I doubt the requirements would be very heavy to get 100FPS.

Video design/editing is another issue. What type of video are we talking about? If you are talking about CGI/animated then the requirements can get pretty high and the CPU, GPU and RAM all factor in.

Yea man if you take off that shiny little cover of there's they have two boards under there. They have a lower clock speed cause they don't need to be fast cause it has twice the power of other boards. Also why they get so F*CKING hot.

And for Infernum Get a 750i mobo for like 125-150 with a GTX260 on there for 250(i think) and a e8400 200 couple of gigs of ram 50-75. Tuck it into a nice mid size tower antec 900 100-150 would be great. Um Get a couple of hard drives 50 bucks apiece. Um then you need 750 watt psu 125-175. Then put vista 64 bit Ultimate 150(i think) on there and you will be able to run almost any game you want at 125 fps on high settings. About 1100 bucks worth of parts and just put it together yourself. Then get a big 24 inch LCD for 300 and your set for almost anything.
