I also host my game server [BKB] at funservers with 12 players. I am having a huge LAG problem which I can’t find the cause. They have a suspicious about the plugins I run might be causing it.

The reason I am writing to you is because I never got any lag problem at n00b and since we are both at the same host I though you could give me some light.

My server uses AMX0.9.9 (which i think is the same you use) and the following plugins are running besides the ones that comes with the amx pack.



anticamping.amx ; This plugin checks for players that arn't moving around enough in CS.

tracers.amx ; Draws tracers for M4A1 and AK47 (each 7th bullet).

pistols_only.amx ; Allow only pistols

switch_teams.amx ; Allow team to switch from one team to another

psychosounds.amx ; Spead several .wav files into game server

enter_leave_msg.amx ; Display a message when player connects or leave the server

Almost all of those are very unnecessary.

Thank you both. I know we may have some trash here; that's what I'm tring to figure out. But I had these plugins before in other server and it didnt use to lag unless I had many 10+ players.

We are now facing such problems with 3,4 players, and we (BKB and n00b) have the same host.

I will uninstall some of them anyway, but I'd like to hear of any known case of lagger plugin.

Once again, thank you for spending your time helping your unfortunate friend here. I will probably not play for a while; I am part of the 98% Broward,FL residents without power. As you may guess, I'm @ a friend's house (lucky 2%).

For some reason, lots of people swear that AMX is great and AMX is better than adminmod.

I like AMX. In fact, there's lots of things about AMX that I like even better than adminmod.

BUTT!!!

Every version of AMX that I have used over the years has been a CPU whore. It clutters the logs and makes them 1 Meg per map, it jams the game with so much information and so many features that you just can't run that much through the CPU fast enough for people to not see the strangling.

Just as a test, comment out your AMX completely, including all plungins. I'm not sure what you're running your server on, but ; or // should work nicely. Run it plain and put it through some exercises, then put a bare install of Adminmod on it with some of it's plugins running.

Even on the Funservers2 machine that had 1000 fps, dual 3.2 Xeons, and 2.5G of ram (with no other servers on it but mine) AMX made it choke when I got it full.

Some of the plugins are probably more CPU intensive than others, so you could probably "get by" with using AMX anyway, but delete the plugins that require fast reactions by the machine. The piss-mod should be fine. Even though it has extra sounds and sprites, it doesn't interrupt the flow of bullets to interject data onto (or into) them.

Tracers are terrible. I love the way they look, but its really hard on the machine to add that data onto the bullet path.

Psychostats live interface is another tough one. Hard to give up, but it's a data chewing beast. If you slice away at some of the others, you might be able to salvage AMX and keep ps too.

Splash, smoke, and chicken are the other items that seem like they would be fast calculating, CPU greedy people.

I would try to disable all of AMX and it's plugins first, and you'll be able to rule out any direct hardware or networking issues before you go any farther.

Just out of curiosity. Does n00bfest uses AMX or Adminmod?
Also have you cheked that AMX is beta testing their new AMX2005? Do you think they might be better (in a macine consumer sense) than the others?

We use adminmod. It seems to be much more CPU friendly than AMX. I haven't seen anything on the new AMX though. I'm sure they'll be making improvements.
