So way back when in aug 11' I moved got new internets and used my old cable modem which at time was about 3months old, now its close to a year and my new internet since aug I've been able to receive up to 50mbs/s (max speed my provider gives out) but any speed test I do I get like 25mbs max. Called my provider and talked to them about why I'm reciving only about half of my capabilties and they said its cause of my modem. That ihave a old one although its only a year old now. They say its a docsis 2.0 and for me to get a docsis 3.0.

Question is...what fucks the difference between them did a few google searches and I don't know what hell its talking about. Any one know anything on this subject matter? And is an extra 25mbs/s worth the investment would I see a difference ect ect?

DOCSIS is a set of technological specifications that are used by cable companies to allow their cable TV operations to also provide broadband.

DOCSIS 3.0 is a newer specification for cable modems which allows them to handle higher transfer speeds.

Furthermore, DOCSIS 3.0 allows your computer to access the IPv6 bank of IP addresses, and be assigned to one, rather than the IPv4 addresses. IPv6 addresses have more than four sets of numbers to them, whereas IPv4 is your standard 1.2.3.4 and unless your cable modem handles DOCSIS 2.0 + IPv6 it won't be able to access much of the coming wave of internet IPs.

Makes more sense than what I've read lol...I've heard of the IPv6 and 4 before just never knewwtf they were for lol...so I can see why now it won't allow all 50mbs/s but is it worth the investment to get the other half of my internet iguess you could say. And would I notice anythng via gaming or streaming videos?

Yep. Also, if down the road your cable company upgrades your service, you'll be able to take advantage of those upgrades much more easily. The question then becomes, do you buy one or just rent a new modem from the cable company?

F*CK renting one I already bought it lastnight lol just haven't been home to install it...but why hell would I add on an extra 20$ a month for one of their modems id rather spend the 107$ it cost me than paying them way more than I should lol. I just wanted to know if it was wise or not and to know sme pros and cons. Also could always return it before going home if majority of techys here said don't do it.

$107 vs $20 x how many months you have service? If you want the 50mb/s speeds and you are planning on staying with this ISP for at least 5 months, the modem will pay for itself, amirite?

Ur right, kwang and ill be in this area that ues same provider for atleast nother year to 18months so modem pays for itself no worries there. Just wondering on gameplay if there's point for having faster mbs or not if there's a thresh hold once it hits doesn't matter anymore.

You'll have a steadier ping, maybe even a constant single-digit, but that can still fluctuate depending on the health of each hop your computer needs to connect to before reaching a server. It also matters how many hops. In games where there are a lot of patches or a lot of dynamically downloaded content, you'll have the advantage.
