IDK why someone would trade an $1100 laptop for a $600 laptop without asking for cash on top or anything.

My $0.02

Sounds sketchy to me aswell. Ask why he would make such a trade?

im pretty sure the alienware is bulky, heavy, gets hot ect it wouldnt be an ideal choice for a kids laptop but if everything is on the up and up i would definatly do it. just make sure when you try it out to benchmark it and put a heavy load on it before you seal the deal it may have thermal issues.
