Well I just discovered that I had IPv6, but the Tomato firmware on my router doesn't support it. DD-WRT does but I really don't want to risk bricking it... so I am in need of a new router. Not to mention, those of you that play with me enough know my ping stays 80-100 and - at least I know - I constantly have choke. Earlier, I bypassed my router and just went from modem to computer - 60-70 ping, 0 choke, 0 loss. And, IPv6 :D Does anyone have any router recommendations? Also what ports to forward for gaming besides 27015? Thanks! |

What do you mean you have IPv6? Like your computer's NIC is IPv6 compatible? IPv6 is only starting to really roll out commercially. I'm not sure you need a new router immediately, but thats up to you. And how are you sure you used IPv6 to connect to the server? About the ping difference -- you'll save some time if you statically forward ports so your router doesn't have to do NAT -- not as much as being directly wired to the cable modem but a whole lot safer. Most clients connect from port 27005. I think that probably all clients use port 27005 on their computer but NAT changes that at the router. If you forwards port 27005 (do both TCP and UDP to be safe, even though I think game packets are only UDP) you should see performance somewhere between using NAT and being directly connected -- especially if PAT was going on. |

Tomato's nice but lacking in that department. I just forwarded that range (20000-27015) and I hope it will make a difference. |

If you are just going to buy a new router then go ahead and try DD-WRT before you do. I use it, it's easy...just make sure you pick the right build for your router and model number. |
